Very Short Central Incisors with Dark Shadows at the Gum Diagnosis At first glance patient #9 could be considered to be just cosmetic dentistry. However, she had fractured enamel, leakage, and decay. The bite was open and she could not chew very well.
Treatment We prepared ten upper teeth and ten lower teeth for 3/4 all ceramic crowns and veneers. We used caries indicator die to differentiate solid tooth structure from decay. The teeth with decay were filled back with core material. The solid healthy tooth was left on the back surface to conserve tooth structure. The lower teeth were built up high enough to restore the bite and allow the patient to chew. The patient and her family and friends are very happy with her smile. Future Treatment As you can imagine, I cannot do anything to improve the esthetic result of this patient. I am very sure this is as good as I can do. She is very faithful about coming back for her cleanings and checkups. She has had no problems to date. The case has been approximately two years. We built her night guard to be sure she doesn't fracture anything in her sleep. The average life expectancy of porcelain veneers is 7 to 9 years.
